Amanuel has always been drawn to things involving Art, Interior design, and Architecture, but as he got to see the works of Yohannes Goitom, Mafi and Ana’s designs, it solidified his choice as he was moved by their distinct approach to fashion and felt the urge to come up with his own way of reflecting his ideas.
He now believes that growing up with a mother who taught others the craft of sewing clothes and a family attracted to fashion had made him drawn in to the industry. He later realized that fashion design was a field in which we could create our own distinctive colors and shapes and that, by experimenting with different fabrics, one could create works of art. It was at that point that he fell in love with Fashion design.
Back in the days His friends used to tell him that he looks like a model based on what he wears, but no one expected him
to push it this far. Despite the skepticism of his friends, his family accepted his decision to pursue a career in fashion design and encouraged him along the way.
Rather than pursuing Medicine or Engineering, which are expected of you in Ethiopia when joining campus, he decided to pursue his love for Art and Creativity, specifically Fashion design. On his journey, the overwhelming popularity of both contemporary and traditional Ethiopian clothing made it clear to him that he was on a path in which he could make a name for himself and benefit society by bringing back long-forgotten trends.
Bahirdar University was his second choice next to Addis Ababa University, where he thought he would study Interior design or Architecture. When he found out that he had been assigned to Bahirdar University, he was joyful to change his plans and decided to pursue his passion of studying arts. After taking many common courses and also pre-engineering courses, he had made it to Fashion design.
Like many other campus students Amanuel has faced his own challenges. But the major challenge that both he and his friends face is the criticisms and
negative comments they get from people around them. But he does not let what people say affect him. Rather, he chooses to look forward and keep going. He says prayer is an effective way to maintain peace of mind in the face of criticism, and he finds comfort in the fact that books can provide him with knowledge and an understanding of what motivates him.
“This field of study offers the chance to learn practical skills and have hands-on creation experience rather than just learning theory, and if you want to pursue it, you must be yourself and take responsibility for your own choices. “First, go outside and look around instead of looking on social media for inspiration, because even the smallest things can inspire us. Then, you must start to create your own works, in whatever form they take, and be open to feedback from those around you.”
“እንደ ህፃን ብናልም ለታላቅነትና ለትልቅነት እንሰራለን … ታላቅም እንሆናለን !”
