University life was an adventure filled with ups and downs. The excitement of starting a new chapter in my life quickly wore off when I realized the food and water quality on campus was unpredictable. I remember walking into the cafeteria for the first time and being hit with the strong smell of cooked lentils.
I was expecting something more appetizing, but instead, I was served a plate of unseasoned lentils, and it tasted like cardboard. It was evident that my taste buds and the cafeteria food weren’t going to get along.
Despite the food, there were other challenges to face as a female student. In some of my classes, I was the only female student, and it was tough to speak up and voice my opinions. However, I was determined to succeed and make a difference. I joined clubs and organizations where I could meet like-minded individuals who were as passionate as I was about making a positive impact on society.
Living in the dorm was a unique experience that I will always remember. When I first arrived, I was met with a room that was barely furnished, with only a small bed, a desk, and a chair. It was a significant change from my comfortable home.
I had to adapt to sharing a room with someone new, learning their quirks, and their study habits. But, I made a new friend, and we discovered that we shared the same love for Ethiopian cuisine, which was a relief for me because that meant I didn’t have to eat the cafeteria food as often.
Throughout my years at university, I had my share of funny moments. I remember walking into the wrong class on my first day of the semester and realizing halfway through the lecture that I was in the wrong place. I quickly packed up my things and bolted out of the classroom, hoping that no one noticed. Another time, I fell asleep during a lecture and snored loudly, which made the entire class laugh.
Now, as a senior, I am proud of how far I’ve come. I’ve learned so much from my professors and peers, and I’ve gained the skills necessary to pursue my dreams. I will forever cherish the friendships I’ve made, the lessons I’ve learned, and the experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. Though my university journey was challenging, it was worth it, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
