Supply Chain Management (SCM) encompasses the planning and management of all the activities and resources that organizations use to produce goods and services that satisfy customer demands. There are five core processes common to all supply chains: planning how to satisfy customer demand, sourcing supply chains for raw materials and services, producing the product or service, delivering the product or service to the customer, and managing returned goods for recycle, repair or reuse. These core processes occur in both manufacturing enterprises and service organization, and apply as well to government agencies and non-profit institutions. Thus the challenges in making all these operations the most efficient and effective are the keys to the success of any organization. As a result the opportunities for initial employment in operations management field and career advancements are tremendous.

What does graduates of Logistics and Supply Chain Management do?
  1. Direct or coordinate production, purchasing, warehousing, distribution, or financial forecasting services or activities to minimize costs and improve accuracy, customer service, or safety. Investigate existing methods or the potential for work simplification to meet product distribution requirements.
  2. Control the transportation, storage, and processing of inventories. They would also decide on the equipment and personnel required to load, unload, move, or store materials. Manage strategic or tactical purchasing, material requirements planning, inventory control, warehousing, or receiving activities. By merging shipments or integrating warehousing and distribution, you can maximize your transportation costs.
  3. Transportation —- They do the following: Analyze product distribution or supply chain procedures in order to find and recommend improvements. Route activity such as invoicing, electronic invoices, and shipment tracing may be managed. Maintain logistical information databases. Use Web-based logistics information systems to track vehicles or containers and remotely monitor the flow of vehicles or inventory. Communicate with or keep track of service providers such as ocean carriers, air freight forwarders, global consolidators, customs brokers, and trucking businesses.
